Holly, I must say you assisted in the evolution of my vision art art work. Mise en scene! I’m preparing a canvas now. I’m planning my movies out a little bit more, and I don’t mind taking snap-shots, but there is so much more that one can endevour (SP) The creation lies in mise en scene. Thank you. You have been an inspiration. BTW – Ivan and I are still in contact and are continuing future projects. Thanks again.

Thanks for posting this. I have been teaching a class on Shelby Lee Adams’ True Meaning of Pictures documentary for several years now, and I just got in contact with him for the first time recently. I was getting very excited to attend this discussion and then saw that this is from last year! What an interesting topic…would have loved to have been there. I now want to know more about Ballen.

I get it, you are reviewing previews. Thanks for the utterly useless information. For such an opinionated blog one would think you would at least have experienced the exhibitions. Preview, review or whatever you want to call it. Your efforts to understand the art/artist is just weak especially for one who lays down such strong personal opinions.

After jurying this for the past 4-5 years I took a break this time, but your comments are salient of the process. There are so many images that always seem like a graphic rather than an interesting image, not that having a graphic emphasis isn’t important, but I always felt there were several folks who entered who use their work for illustrative purposes, rather than securing their own vision. Great criticism Chas. By the way I picked up the book you mentioned and its next on my stack after I finish ‘The Gift’. It always took me a week to finish those Critical Mass reviews, and I love when you find a diamond in the rough, but it’s a lot of digging.
